How Amazon OpenSearch Service pricing works

A managed domain is billed per instance-hour for every node in it: data nodes, dedicated master nodes and UltraWarm nodes, at a rate set by the instance type (the names end in .search). A production domain with three data nodes and three dedicated masters is six instances. Reserved instances for one or three years lower the instance rate. EBS storage attached to the nodes is billed per GB-month, and UltraWarm and cold storage per GB-month of data. OpenSearch Serverless is billed differently, per OCU-hour of indexing and search capacity plus the storage it holds, and is not part of this table.

A worked example. m6g.large.search costs $0.1590 an hour on-demand in Asia Pacific (Osaka), which is about $116.07 a month for one instance running all 730 hours. A one-year reservation with no upfront payment brings that to $0.1100 an hour, 31% less. Every other type, engine and purchase option for Asia Pacific (Osaka) is in the table above.

OpenSearch pricing: common questions

How much does m6g.large.search cost in Asia Pacific (Osaka)?

$0.1590 an hour on-demand in Asia Pacific (Osaka), which is about $116.07 a month for one instance running all 730 hours. A one-year reservation with no upfront payment brings that to $0.1100 an hour, 31% less.

How is OpenSearch Serverless priced compared with a managed domain?

Serverless bills OpenSearch Compute Units (OCUs) per hour for indexing and for search, plus storage per GB-month, and keeps a minimum number of OCUs running even when idle. A managed domain bills the instances you choose, by the hour. Small, steady workloads are usually cheaper on a small managed domain; spiky or unpredictable ones are easier to run on Serverless.

What is not included in the OpenSearch instance price?

Storage and data transfer. Each data node needs EBS storage billed per GB-month (plus provisioned IOPS and throughput above the gp3 baseline), and UltraWarm or cold tiers are billed per GB of data they hold.
