How Amazon RDS pricing works

You pay per hour for each database instance, at a rate set by the instance class, the engine (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Oracle, SQL Server or Aurora) and the deployment: a Multi-AZ instance keeps a standby in a second Availability Zone and costs about twice the Single-AZ rate. Commercial engines sold licence-included carry the licence in the hourly price. Reserved instances for one or three years lower the instance rate. Database storage (per GB-month), provisioned IOPS, backup storage beyond the size of the database and data transfer are billed on top of the instance.

A worked example. db.m6g.large costs $0.2080 an hour on-demand (MySQL, Single-AZ) in Europe (Zurich), which is about $151.84 a month for one instance running all 730 hours. A one-year reservation with no upfront payment brings that to $0.1602 an hour, 23% less. Every other type, engine and purchase option for Europe (Zurich) is in the table above.

RDS pricing: common questions

How much does db.m6g.large cost in Europe (Zurich)?

$0.2080 an hour on-demand (MySQL, Single-AZ) in Europe (Zurich), which is about $151.84 a month for one instance running all 730 hours. A one-year reservation with no upfront payment brings that to $0.1602 an hour, 23% less.

Why does Multi-AZ cost twice as much?

A Multi-AZ instance runs a second, synchronously replicated standby in another Availability Zone, so you pay for two instances and two copies of the storage. It is the price of automatic failover; development and test databases rarely need it.

What is not included in the RDS instance price?

Storage, provisioned IOPS, backups beyond the free allowance (equal to the database's storage), snapshots exported to S3 and data transfer. For small databases the storage line can be larger than the instance line.
