How Amazon EC2 pricing works

You pay for each instance while it is running, per second with a 60-second minimum on Linux and Windows. The rate depends on the instance type, the region, the operating system and the tenancy. Four ways to buy the same instance exist: on-demand with no commitment, reserved instances and Savings Plans for a one- or three-year commitment, and spot for spare capacity that AWS can take back at two minutes' notice. EBS volumes and snapshots, data transfer, public IPv4 addresses, load balancers and NAT gateways are billed separately from the instance.

A worked example. m6i.large costs $0.1070 an hour on-demand (Linux, Shared) in EU (Ireland), which is about $78.11 a month for one instance running all 730 hours. A one-year reservation with no upfront payment brings that to $0.0708 an hour, 34% less. Every other type, engine and purchase option for EU (Ireland) is in the table above.

EC2 pricing: common questions

How much does m6i.large cost in EU (Ireland)?

$0.1070 an hour on-demand (Linux, Shared) in EU (Ireland), which is about $78.11 a month for one instance running all 730 hours. A one-year reservation with no upfront payment brings that to $0.0708 an hour, 34% less.

What is not included in the EC2 instance price?

Storage and network. EBS volumes and snapshots are billed per GB-month, data leaving AWS or crossing Availability Zones per GB, and every public IPv4 address per hour. A stopped instance stops the instance charge but keeps paying for its EBS volumes and Elastic IPs.

Are reserved instances or Savings Plans cheaper for EC2?

For the same term and payment option, a standard reserved instance and an EC2 Instance Savings Plan cost about the same, and both are cheaper than a Compute Savings Plan, which costs a little more in exchange for following you across families, sizes and regions. The table shows each rate side by side with the hours from which it beats on-demand.
